Spending 25 Billion Taka Annually on Coal Imports While Sitting on 300 Years of Reserves

Assalamu Alaikum. Bangladesh has billions of tons of coal reserves underground.

According to experts, considering the current demand, it is possible to meet the country's coal needs for at least 200 to 300 years with these reserves.

However, the reality is that the country is now rapidly becoming import-dependent. Every year,to 25 thousand crore taka is spent on importing coal from abroad. On the one hand, this is increasing pressure on foreign exchange. On the other hand, the country's energy security is at risk.

Despite the hundreds of years of energy potential under the country's soil, why are we becoming dependent on foreign coal? And despite so many huge reserves, when will the decision to extract domestic coal be made? Today's top news is about this. I am Ahmed Jamil Haque.

There are huge coal resources hidden under the country's soil. On the other hand, Bangladesh is importing coal from abroad while keeping those resources almost intact. These five major coal fields, Bora Pukuria, Fulbari and Dighipara in Dinajpur, Khalas Pir in Rangpur and Jamalganj in Joypurhat, have potential reserves of more than 7.1 billion tons. The largest reserve is in Jamalganj. It is estimated that this one place alone has about 5.4 billion tons of coal. In total, the country's potential coal reserves are about 7.1 billion tons. Currently, the annual demand of the country's coal-based power plants is about 12 million to 15 million tons. If the entire reserve is used, it is possible to meet the country's energy needs for several hundred years. Even if only half of the coal is considered recoverable due to technological and environmental constraints, it can ensure 200 to 300 years of electricity generation

of energy. With the commissioning of power plants one after another, including Payra, Rampal, Matarbari and Bara Pukuria, this demand is increasing further. Experts estimate that if the entire 7.1 billion tons of coal reserves discovered in the country could be utilized, energy security for about 500 years could be ensured according to the current demand.

Better sell your shares then because you can't develop the North without Phulbari and mine mouth power and you have nothing to do with that so no reason to own any. I would not be invested without the bigger picture.

You cannot give news on Phulbari before you have it. In negotiations atm, result due before December when Teesta plans are finalised. The two projects make sense together but not apart.

I meant how the country has sunk Xhita. I think the London market will continue to take KEFI for a ride because the country is down the pan but the city still aim for unearned rewards costing KEFI. If I didn't have investments I really would be miserable and if the main market overcharges that will make me miserable because they are my compatriots.

I'm with you Xhita. It is politics as well as attitude. It doesn't seem right to be jingoistic when considering how we have sunk. I wish I was not miserable. I would prefer to list in Australia than UK.

Agitation from some is to get reflected glory when the GL is given so they might know something.

Digit, the Foundation will be in the same boat as other former POLO holders. It was maybe a long shot by the donor who was writing off his investment otherwise. POLO should have been sorted by now so it may well be sorted behind a curtain and the final negotiations are about GCM involvement or modality as Tang puts it.

If Tang has shifted the private POLO resources into a different entity he may need the Hibiscus sale funds to pay the POLO legacy holders as GCM may not be contractually bound now. (post 21.53 by redeye mentions a POLO Investments). One thing is certain; Tang has to present a clean sheet to get SoD approval.

He was holding the 30% by raising the conversion price to 7.5p but now can only get paid interest in cash unless reregistered hence he changed tack and did a quick second placing and took the SP to 5.4p is my guess.

It is a gamble on the multiplier applied to the SP on GL. All investing has a gambling mentality to it and the odds are long with this one at 10/1! so people are put off. We have studied the form and know it is under priced. Bangladesh is obliged imo to do a good deal for GCM if they hope to attract funds alhough it is a unique situation and while Bangladesh could underpay they do have to make a decision soon and it has to be a return worth being invested for at the current SP.

Tang wants a return for POLO but can't get it as he hacked off some people in charge of registration. He counters this development with two quick placings rewarding movers and shakers in Dyani and DGI as well as maybe some friends. Conclusion being he has made up a bit for the POLO upset. The low SP further punishes the former POLO players who have maybe stymied the registration and Tang increases the reward to the new shareholders compensating for his placings and lowering the SP set for the following reason: Tang and the Chinese will work out a SoD approval strategy based on a lower SP to persuade Bangladesh that the x10 takeover figure is much smaller compared to when the SP was 11p due to their controlled selling. All imo.

My policy is the same as Tang, keep your fingers crossed for the green light this year. Bangladesh politics and debt burden machination keeps the investment interesting.

If you've got GCM you can sell them. simple as that. If you want to pile in and buy a lot jamess the SP will go up but if the controllers then want it lower, they will sell more. I believe in market forces the same as everyone but if someone is trying to hold the SP at certain levels for certain reasons I try and give a plausible explanation. I am not saying I am right but I do not see regular forces at play and to bounce off 5.4 three times could be because someone does not want it lower than that. It could be the market only though but it does not seem so to me.

I don't dictate to the bulletin board but like to voice an opinion in case it helps as OlivettiChamp has helped me think up this one.

The SP has gone to 1.4p in March '25 climbing to 11p then held at over 8p for a couple of months after two placings. In April it dropped to just over 5p in response to the controller(s) and market forces or market forces. I have explained what might be in play which absolutely, can be ignored if people want.

I would say a bounce will happen after GL and we know what is happening and not for chart analysis reasons but market farces post GL but the current level is because with GL imminent the controller does not want a return to 1.5p as that would not help negotiations for licence reward and work done.

Of course, it is being controlled, not a natural market.
