Why would anyone object if they have nothing to hide.1 Aug 2024 18:42
Thank you Fordy, for promoting your families worthy cause today, it bringing out the best from many of our posters.
However, I would just like to recall to all, an experience I had 35+ yrs ago & the dangers of any casual profiling, be it racially or by nationality, by religious identity or other. My first ever flight, was to England to work & earn some money to pay for my unaffordable Irish College education, during the Thatcher Building Boom/Bust. First off the plane with little hand luggage & needing to p*sh, I was pulled straight in by an unknown to me, CID. They harassed me for 2 hours, asking all kinds of nasty questions, terrorism, bombs, IRA, who sent me, etc, etc. I had no idea what they were talking about, no idea why they stopped me & felt completely disillusioned by my arrival to England.
Eventually, I was released & found my way to the Landlady's house, soon got some small "buy & sell" jobs here & there & within 2 month I found myself working on "final fix work" for a subbie on a military medical recovery accommodation site in Leatherhead. Not the least vetting or security requested for any of the subbie crew to enter this military premises, which turns on its head, the gauntlet, I suffered on arrival to England.
My point, is that any & all stop & search, should be very targeted to know suspects & associates, to recognized behavior patterns, etc, & should never over generalised & do more harm than good to the wider community.
GLA, long & strong, Donal
ps - I have never ever been first of a plane since :-)
