RE: This Government27 Jan 2021 06:43
The major thing the government failed at was closing borders at the start. But even analysts concede that in a country of such heavy global footfall and industry to and fro, this could have been tricky to do quickly. (Though I think they should have done regardless of economic consequences.) Also we're not used to western pandemics here. In Asia it's a mask-wearing, authority-fearing culture, used to pandemics and with a germaphobe ideology in many places.
Since WWII, western countries have all got complacent and lazy, including the UK, because we've never really had to fight as hard again since. We've known a relatively easy life (individual hardship notwithstanding) and have had access to clean water, sanitation, food, shelter, our needs being met, money for holidays, education, etc, etc. We allow our citizens to be free, say and do what they want, go where they want, criticise the government, and each other openly. It's all been about maintaining our standard and level of development in a country that attracts the world, despite the media obsession with 'this little insignificant island.'
I think we, as well as other developed nations, took our eye off the ball, at the start. But then so did the EU, the US and South America. So did China. So did the WHO, all in their own way and for their own reasons. As for the UK, few to nobody over the age of about 50 has been out house partying, raving under railway bridges, congregating in parks and beaches en masse and leaving pizza trays and Coke bottles behind, protesting all damn summer and mobbing to rip down historical statues. And no elderly people have been seen crammed together, maskless and breathing all over each other to get the latest Nike trainers at London dept stores.
So I believe SOME of the young generation of the west should take heat for their own recklessness imo. Thank goodness we have 1. good considerate people of all ages, most of whom follow the rules. 2. innovative companies in the UK and elsewhere actually working hard to try and do something to slow this disease down.
