Carlisle - Southend25 Jan 2018 20:47
Pleased to hear this, may be rare good news for Flybe (via Stobarts).
Carlisle airport re-opening and flights to Lake District from London could start in June. This is much better than current situation where you need to fly to Newcastle and drive along Hadrian's wall. One article covering this (inews) below.
Caveats are that apparently, Southend counts as London (but then surprisingly it is closer than Gatwick/Heathrow) and Carlisle counts as the Lake district. Of course, of interest to everybody here, Southend is owned by Stobarts ...
"Cumbria will receive its first commercial flights in a quarter of a century this summer when Carlisle Lake District Airport reopens on 4 June. Flights from London to the Lake District were announced this morning, as well as services from Belfast and Dublin. While the London airport has yet to be revealed, Southend is a strong contender. The Essex airport previously RAF Rochford was bought by Stobart Aviation in 2008, the Carlisle-based company that also owns Carlisle Lake District Airport. It revived Southends fortunes by investing more than 120m in a new terminal, train station, control tower and extended runway. The Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership has committed 4.95m to the development of the Lake Districts new hub. Lake District zip wire will endanger fighter pilots The airlines operating from Belfast, Dublin and London to the Lake District havent been announced but could well be Flybe and Aer Lingus, airlines with which Stobart Air has franchise agreements. The flight time is likely to be less than an hour, compared to a train journey of three and-a-quarter hours from London Euston. Manchester currently offers the most convenient flight hub for the Lakes, with train connections to Kendal and Oxenholme taking between 90 minutes and two hours. Kate Willard, Stobarts head of corporate projects said, We look forward to working with partners in the visitor economy over these next months to help develop packages and promotions to make sure that our air services match the needs of our visitors; that were able to attract new visitors to Cumbria and the surrounding area and that we are able to support the local economy through the development of a sustainable and really fantastic airport.
