Influenza antivirals have been around for more than a decade and yet we still rely on vaccines. I think the biggest problem with the antivirals is that they have to be taken soon after infection (presentation of first symptoms) to be effective. Most people have a ‘wait and see’ approach to illness so very few end up receiving antivirals. IMO vaccines will always be the first line of defence and play the biggest role preventing illness.
