Wolf, understand your view but im not just looking at my town, i have named four i have seen this week alone, and a varied cross section of both small, touristy, business park, and major city. I have seen plenty of others recently, inc Worcester Evesham and a sprinkling of smaller Cotswold villages. You also state your town is doing ok (agree on the prolifiration of cafes), so thats a quick sample of more than five between us - all seem to be ok and all are 'ordinary' towns. Others are clearly going to be different depending on the areas demographics and maybe afluence but its quite clear people are spending money on the average high street, denying that is ludicrus.
I see no mass unemployment involviing ex shopworkers. Indeed there is actually a shortage of people to fill the jobs that are readily availible, and as a consequence, its undeniable that wages have actually risen for such workers of late.
Why is that if there are no shoppers and everybody is shopping online as claimed? There is a mixture of both, with a finite supply of money and wanted product being purchased with both methods, physical and online.
Its simply nonsense to say the high street is dead, although i do agree with you there is a lack of men specific clothing retailers, when compared with a few years back.
Being specific to my area again, being semi rural and touristy a fair proportion of men seem to be togged up locally in outdoorsy gear, from the likes of Mountain Warehouse, even sports direct, so maybe mens 'wants' for casual type wear are changing from the traditional trousers and shirt, same with office atire, cant remember the last time i saw anyone wear a suit and tie at a desk.
