After a hernia operation, you cannot do heavy lifting, strenuous exercise, or activities that strain your abdomen (like bending, twisting) for several weeks (4-6+), avoid alcohol/smoking (24-48 hrs+), and don't drive until pain-free and able to brake safely (1-2+ weeks). You also shouldn't submerge the wound in baths or pools until healed, usually 2+ weeks, but gentle walking is encouraged.
Immediate Restrictions (First few days/weeks)
Heavy Lifting: Avoid lifting anything over ~15 pounds (about a gallon of milk) for at least 2 weeks, but ideally 4-6 weeks.
Strenuous Activity: No intense exercise, sports (football, rugby), or activities that strain your core for 4-8+ weeks.
Driving: Don't drive until you can comfortably operate the pedals and perform an emergency stop, usually 1-2 weeks; check with your insurance.
Alcohol & Smoking: Avoid for 24-48 hours if you had general anesthesia; smoking should be avoided longer (2+ weeks) as it impairs healing.
Bathing/Swimming: No baths or swimming until the wound is fully healed (around 2 weeks), though showers with waterproof dressings are often okay.
General Restrictions & What to Avoid
Straining: Don't strain to have a bowel movement (eat fiber, drink fluids to prevent constipation).
Sudden Movements: Avoid quick twisting, bending, or movements that put tension on the surgical site.
Operating Machinery: Not for 24-48 hours after general anesthesia.
What's Encouraged
Gentle Movement: Short walks help circulation and healing; gradually increase activity as you feel able.
Rest: Get plenty of rest in the first 24-48 hours.
Support: Cough/sneeze into your hand or a pillow to support the wound.
