Pokerchips. I know, & that's what I said, although perhaps you miss understood. So it all equals out. After the divi adjustments you are just betting on the sp movement after taking out the movement caused by the divi. Perhaps it is a bit confusing though?

Cheapshareboy. The divi is neither a loss or a gain, It's just a payment made to shareholders, which is ideally covered by earnings, but often isn't. As for shorting, It makes no difference if you short, or go long, you are betting on the underlying share price movement which will exclude any affect of ex divi day movement(at opening price).
