This is just a copy / paste Wyn, but interesting. And we have an ageing population so certainly a big impact if AVCT can crack it:
Head and neck cancer primarily affects individuals over age 50, with a higher incidence in men, often linked to smoking, heavy alcohol consumption, and HPV infection. Risk factors also include poor oral hygiene, betel nut usage, and exposure to industrial dust or radiation. HPV-linked cancers are increasingly common.
Key Risk Factors and Demographics
Age and Gender: Mostly occurs in people over 50, particularly over 70, and is more common in men than women.
Tobacco and Alcohol: Using tobacco products (smoking, chewing) and heavy alcohol consumption are the primary risk factors, often acting together.
Human Papillomavirus (HPV): High-risk HPV, often sexually transmitted, is a major cause of oropharyngeal cancer (back of the tongue and tonsils).
Occupational Exposure: Long-term exposure to wood dust, leather dust, asbestos, and certain chemicals (e.g., in textile or metal industries) increases risk.
Environmental/Other: Poor oral hygiene, betel nut (paan) chewing, and low immunity can contribute to risks.
Targeted Risk Groups
Men over 50: Highest risk demographic.
Those with High-Risk HPV: Often younger individuals.
Individuals with Significant Occupational Exposure: Bakers, carpenters, and metalworkers.
People with Low Immunity: Such as those with HIV or on immune-suppressing medication
