Junior gold miner Greatland Gold plc (LON: GGP) has received a funding boost to the tune of up to $120 million from Fortescue Metals Group Limited (ASX: FMG) boss Andrew ‘Twiggy’ Forrest’s private company.
As a result, Twiggy’s Wyloo Metals will be the London-listed miner’s largest shareholder ahead of its planned ASX float.
Let’s take a closer look at the company and its connection with the S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) giant.
Fortescue boss backs ASX hopeful
Twiggy has invested up to $120 million into Greatland ahead of its planned Australian listing.
That could see the Fortescue boss walk away with a 14.6% stake in the soon-to-be ASX-listed junior miner.
The Aussie billionaire’s Wyloo has snapped up around 430 million shares at 8.2 pence (14 cents) apiece, totalling $60 million.
It will also receive warrants to subscribe to approximately 352 million shares at an exercise price of 10 pence (around 17 cents) apiece. If exercised in full, that will provide another $60 million.
And it looks like Australian retail investors won’t have to wait long to get in on the action. Greatland Gold recently flagged its intent to float on the ASX within the coming 12 months.
The company has also received commitments for a $220 million debt syndicate with three leading banks, including Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Ltd (ASX: ANZ).
The cash is earmarked to help fund the junior miner’s 30% stake in the Havieron copper-gold development project and its exploration in Western Australia’s Paterson region. It will see it fully funded through to production and free cash flow.
Commenting on the investment, Wyloo CEO Luca Giacovazzi said:
Havieron is a tier one deposit that continues to grow in scale and quality … The Paterson range is emerging as Western Australia’s next prolific mining province, and Greatland has an expansive tenement package.
We are excited to be a part of the development of what we expect will be a low cost, modern mining operation with very high environmental and social standards.
Additionally, two notable Fortescue names have been appointed to the ASX hopeful’s board.
Fortescue’s deputy chair Mark Barnaba will step up as its chair next year. Meanwhile, former CEO Elizabeth Gaines will take up the role of deputy chair.

So to be plain, I concur with Zoros. Wyloo/Fortescue is the set up to beat.

If there is to be a bid at some stage, on the set up as we know it, Wyloo is the obvious candidate. It’s great for Ggp to have brought them and their resources in. At the right price of course.

All to the future, I guess. I imagine nearby existing infrastructure may be Ncm processing plant. So as an example, it is the sort of thing which might provide a more cost effective, mutually beneficial arrangement. Strategic location. But I have not followed where Ggp are with non-Havieron tenements.

I was just checking out the mood of this board with Ncm, to clear it away moving forward.
I am satisfied that for Ncm the bottom line will be get on with it or get out. And they will get on, Telfer and all the rest of it.

Anyway, can’t see any way Ncm can nick the Ggp share of Havieron, even in theory, whether you like them or not.

Just so I can understand, what is it that Newcrest has actually done to make some so anti Ggp’s partner?

Lawyers will have crawled all over this stuff. NCM will have had as much interest in getting it right as Ggp.

“Following the delivery of a Feasibility Study, the Management Committee will meet to consider a Decision to Mine. It is unthinkable that Ggp, Wyloo, and the rest, banks, will not have gone into the legalities of all matters impinging on the security of their investment and involvement.

I have always had difficulty in coming to terms with a premise that would see NCM expecting it’s shareholders to swallow a policy that thwarted the purpose of it’s own JV - delaying seems contrary to that company’s interests and the best interests of its shareholders.
Now, the unforeseen can happen in business as we all know from our various investments.
Having said that, Ggp is now in a much improved position, with strategic investors, experience and cash availability, to deal in the best interests of the company with the unforeseen. And any potential moves by NCM, if they occur, will not be unforeseen. Ncm will have to deal with Wyloo as well as Mr. Day.

People keep looking for boogeymen. They’ve yet to find one.

That’s Havieron. It’s impossible to say what situation might arise in the event of other opportunities.

What’s the point in nit-picking over terminology, after thought has gone into RNS preparation. The intention is very clear.

Well, I think that was a fair enough old day today. Big milestone for the company on the road to production. Got rid of a few sellers too - not going to follow the company, Havieron and all that, going sometime anyway, so just as well now. Hopefully increasing volume will help get rid of others.
And then there’ll be the anticipated newsflow. Further strengthening of management team I think was mentioned. Possibility of Ggp drumming up greater institutional support, to tie up floating shares, and a cross listing facilitating that. And I believe there is a fair prospect of management buys in due course, helping it along. And a bit of prospecting on the other tenements, and what may flow from that. Further dilution not anticipated in the foreseen.
Nothing going wrong here, is there, from a company perspective? That’s what counts, after all.
