Well see how this goes but I let this one pass too. It didn't make any sense taking up an offer at a price the shares were already trading up and the case is not as convincing as I would have like and it feels to me that there are better places to put my money right now.

All well and good but that is rather the point. The decisions as to how NS oil and gas is taxed will be made elsewhere so let's not kid ourselves that our views will make much difference. All we can plausibly do is to judge whether the share price is good or bad given the political and fiscal climate in which the company is operating.

Much of what the government is doing was flagged ahead of the election so we can bank that as old news. There is still the open question of capital allowances and I won't try to claim that isn't a major source of uncertainty which is undermining the viability of investments. But once again the productive line of discussion is how much this is priced in and it is my view that the share price here is almost certainly overcooking the pessimism.

If I had more liquidity in my ISA I would certainly be adding to my holding here. And I still might add a position in my GIA ahead of the announcement.

That sounds like it is someone else's problem, and I suspect Starmer will be unconcerned too. I neither like or loathe Musk - viewing him more as a slightly comic character who has a lot of money - but if he wants to buy a company I own shares in I'll take the cash if the offer is good.

They play to their audience and that means scaring Americans about the state of play in the UK. Musk has his fanbase too in the US but they appear to be as deluded as he is - do you think UK shareholders would have agreed to give him 10% of the company based on the claim that he wouldn't be sufficiently interested?

There's no point in us pretending to play along to caricatures. Not least because we have public finance problems we need to be grown up about.

If you are judging Americans by the statements of Trump and Vance then I don't know how I can help. We care about Trump and Vance solely because they might win the election in the US. Apart from that they are a comedy double act.

Dangerous to start spreading misinformation on a thread like this. It's a hotbed of capitalist purists (with a soupcon of climate change deniers) so fertile ground for suggestions that dividends might be redirected via HMT treasury before redistribution to undeserving masses of benefit claimants.

We can argue to for ever on the rights and wrongs of the government's tax policies but I fail to see what purpose it serves on this board - beyond a broader disappointment at the SP level. It is just a lot of hot air (pun intended) but there's no chance of it affecting the government.

Perhaps it is something in the mindset of people looking to dig for resources but the temperament is poorly suited to the current political climate where a little more skill is required to achieve what we all want. Belittling the competence of those in power has won the argument so will do nothing to improve the prospects of this or other similar companies.

The broader picture is about what happens to the future of North Sea oil. HMT will have an interest but so too will be the unions. I know where I would rather be pinning my hopes.

I'm more than relaxed about the current dip in the share price. Dividend payment due in a few weeks and it all recycles into a price that has a good tailwind. If the market wants to throw a fit, I can wait.

If I hadn't recently added to my stake recently at 407p, I'd be all over this at the current price.

So did you sell? You only tend to talk down the price when you are hoping to pick them up cheaply.

I don't recall what your explanation was for the previous dip down to 14p. The ASX placing was the stated reason but this didn't happen then and the shares bounced up again. There doesn't appear to be any obvious reason why the shares might go up 50% then drop back to the original levels.

Window of opportunity closed, it seems. I had this marked for a double-up tomorrow on that 27-28p price.

Can't complain though. There are still plenty of other cheap valuations to buy into.

While I would be wary of ignoring familiar valuation metrics, there are some exceptions to be made to this and Burford is one of those. It's primary source of value is in the expected stream of realisations from cases as they progress with some further return from "committed" capital in current cases. They is upside measure on this basis.

Growth will come from new cases as an when they are taken and the business has a sound strategy for selecting those cases. Here it is limited by available capital and human resources like any organisation but if they are not taking on the new cases, it probably means that they are making more from the business in hand. The competitive pressures that might threaten the on-going business are likely to be temporary as the organisation appears (at least to me) to have the edge over most obvious threats to their business model.

That's very charitable of you but I can't find it in my heart to treat a corporate entity worthy of such philanthropy. If I can I would buy the shares below the offer price. The "offer" at this point in time is nothing more than an option to buy the shares in a few days at a fixed price and worth next to nothing but I'll keep it just in case it does become worth something.

I'd love to speculate what it might mean if the current price is at or close to the offer price but I fear there are too many external factors influencing things here.

I thought I would take a look at what the company were offering and first impressions were quite disappointing. Second delivery arrived today about 20 minutes after I received the e-mail to warn me that it would arrive today.

Operationally I think there is plenty to be worried about with this company. I still haven't worked out how the website works but adequate notice of a delivery from an e-commerce site is such a basic mantra that I can see why the price is depressed. They may be doing some solid work on the financial side of the business but they need to start paying a little more attention to the customer side which is where the value lies.

Still holding in hope but I'd invest more if I were convinced that their service was sound.

FWIW, conflict is generally only bad for stocks and share in companies whose assets are directly at risk . For the rest, it's frequently beneficial to earnings.

At that price you're on 10% dividend, or 6% over risk free. I can't tell you that you picked the bottom of the market but if you view this as a bond proxy, I don't know anywhere where you can get that sort of premium.

She's a tough negotiator. Maybe you shouldn't have led with how cheap the price was . Le mot juste is "value" though really the big sell has to be on future spending opportunities.
