Researchers from Queen Mary University of London compared data on smoking and the use of electronic cigarettes in countries where smoking patterns have been similar in the past , but the laws on vaping differ today.
This revealed, for instance, that both smoking rates and sales of cigarettes seem to be falling more quickly in the UK than in Australia, where the sale of vapes is very heavily restricted. Similarly in Japan, the introduction of heated tobacco products - which heat tobacco leaf to a lower temperature than conventional cigarettes was followed by a marked fall in cigarette sales. However, the researchers note that the timeframe of the government-funded study is small and further studies will be needed to confirm their findings.
