If MARS business model were that of simply a large collection of pubs in the centre of towns then I'd agree with you. However, it's not. MARS are first to acknowledge that the desirability of these outlets is waning, and has shifted focus to family friendly eateries on the outskirts of town. Yes, a collection of centred pubs still operate, but the growth for MARS is coming from the 'two for one' type outlet. From personal experience, the two for one' just down the road from me is almost always packed. I don't deny that the weather has an impact on business over a wet summer, but families/groups are still clearly heading out to eat/drink in droves. Likewise, I'm still seeing the likes of hobgoblin, pedigree etc well positioned on supermarket shelves.
Many over the years have said the industry is on its last legs, yet it's still here, and keeps evolving. I'm confident.
