EV's, Interesting to note!8 Sep 2022 10:51
Slightly off topic but I've been taking a look at EV's and the new electricity price caps and any cost savings of running an EV have almost been wiped out.
Assuming you have a petrol car doing 40mpg and with petrol at £1.70 per litre it costs roughly £7.70 per gallon.
Electricity will be £0.51p per kwh and with EV's doing generally 3 miles per kwh, to achieve the equivalent of 40mpg £0.51 needs multiplying by 13.33 therefore giving £6.80 to travel 40 miles.
This is ignoring the additional daily standing charge, but you have to pay that anyway to run your house.
This WILL BE the cheapest electricity available come October UNLESS you have home solar, how much charging will cost at petrol stations is anyone's guess! Is there anybody here who runs an EV and regularly recharges on the motorway that could share the current costs?
With a running cost saving of £0.90p per 40 miles, (at the best) to recoup the minimum of £10,000 extra for the cost of an EV compared to a petrol you will need to travel over 440,000 miles!
I suspect the car and the battery will be scrap long before then!
There are obviously variables here, Tax benefits etc, but worth looking at in more detail before anyone spends £40,000 on an EV thinking there going to save money.
