Don't forget many of the Oil & Gas companies have/had major investments in Russia.
BP's Rosneft holding is potentially a $25 Billion loss.
If this does turn into a total loss, which personally I don't think it will, it'll take a fair few exceptional quarters to recover that money.

Yes you're probably right, governments can if necessary rewrite the rules etc but the problem is they will seriously damage the reputation of the country.
Oil companies can spend 5-10 years getting a new field into production, hundreds of millions of £ spent, rigs built, subsea pipework etc.
These investments are made because a country will have a stable working environment, taxation rates etc.
If governments change the rules to suit these companies will have no option but reconsider the investment case.
A prime example being some of the less stable African countries where regime changes etc resulted in major mining companies ceasing investment and pulling out.

Going forward the UK government could put conditions into any future licence auctions.
The oil companies could then decide if it is viable to submit bids.
Some of these fields have been operating since the 70's and you just cannot rewrite the terms to suit.

IMO not much.
Depending on AA news anything could happen in the medium term.
You cannot discount a buyout.
These big companies know where the future is heading and Anglo are definitely in the mix here and ARC Minerals.

It's no good moaning about it on here, there's nothing anyone can do.
You just need to decide whether to switch off and wait, which is what I'm doing, or sell up and try and make up your loss elsewhere.

Gold, platinum, coffee etc etc
There traded on world markets, the price is global.
The UK should have its own oil & gas company or have licence clauses in place.

Then blame the standing Governments at the time of the license sale for not putting into any contracts a clause for a discounted supply.
Again BP do not set the prices, OPEC control supply which therefore influences prices.

I've said it multiple times before but why doesn't the UK Government set up a "new" British Gas?
Let them have all the onshore licences and let them "frack" the feck out of them and all Gas is supplied to UK consumers at cost (or just over) price....
Or....
Instead of squandering tens of Billions of £ on HS2 use the money to subsidise boiler replacement/modifications so that we can start using Natural Gas/Hydrogen mix and therefore massively reduce CO2 emissions.

BP, Shell or any of the other operators in the North Sea?
BP "pays" for an exploration block/licence. If it discovers economic oil and gas it will over its working life pay a shed load of tax.
You cannot nationalise BP, it is a global company with shareholders around the world.
If BP are hit with a ridiculous "windfall tax" I really hope they grow a pair and tell the Government to stick it up their "arris" and relocate to somewhere like Azerbaijan!

Words like profiting and PROFITEERING have been banded about but again BP doesn't set the price.
Profiteering is buying something, say a bottle of wine and being charged £50 for it when you KNOW its an £8 bottle of wine.
BP trades oil & gas, it WILL BE paying market rates with maybe any discount it can negotiate, global prices are global prices, there not BP's.

Or how about closing the tax loopholes which currently allow people to live and work here but pay tax abroad.
Or how about the individuals who work for say the BBC but are employed through an offshore company avoiding tax.
Or the hundreds of companies, hedge funds etc which operate in the UK but are registered in offshore countries like Jersey or the Cayman Islands?
Or MOST of the politicians who claim more in expenses than they get in wages....
The system stinks, its no good just smacking BP for just doing their job.
