I'm a long-term holder of BRWM but have wanted to get into individual mining shares (FRES in particular) for a little while now. Today's fall has given me the chance to BTFD, albeit in a small way: I bagged 25 shares. I'll certainly be looking to add to this holding as & when finances allow.

The world is a awash in debt that can never be repaid. All fiat currencies fail. Every single one of them over their thousand-year existence, without exception. Indeed, their average lifespan is a mere 27 years. Gold & silver have a 5000 year history as money (& of holding their value).

Anyone who thinks that the £, $ or € won't fail need to convince themselves that "this time it's different". I can assure you, it's not.

The currencies of the world will fail, & many of them are overdue. Some will tell you they will fail by design in order to usher in a new world currency. They may well be right. The world (or even just the UK) doesn't need to go back on a gold standard for precious metals to show their true worth.

I won't speculate on exactly where the gold or silver price will be in a year, two years or even five years from now; but I believe it will be MAGNITUDES HIGHER than it is now. Hold PHYSICAL PMs (if you can) & invest in sound mining stocks (like this one). The next financial crisis will make the last one look like the teddy bear's picnic. PMs will ensure your money makes it to the other side.

Well, the strategy Chief's wife just bought-in in a big way. There's probably some tax avoidance wrapped-up in that transaction, but it sounds positive nonetheless.

A decent spike in the oil price (if it all kicks-off with Iran) will provide some support.

How can you do this? I've been on the Greencoat website & they have details but nowhere (that I can see) where you can subscribe to the new placing. I'd rather do that & get them a few p cheaper than buying at the current market value.

I see nothing to be concerned about here. Whilst there's nothing eye-catching in a positive sense, I see nothing to warrant the continued decline in the SP &, with the yield now topping 8.5%, I'm adding substantially to average down.

So in one day (Wednesday), THREE (count 'em) brokers advocate a price rise of AT LEAST 40%.....so what's going on? I see value here, but it's clear that others don't.

Not looking to trade short-term (I bought with a view to hold for the dividend & see appreciation over time), but I didn't expect to see an 8% drop with three weeks of buying-in.

Rapidly becoming a disaster, this one. I hold BRCI & BRWM which, whilst not identical to CQS, are in a similar market, & whilst they're both sliding, neither of them are getting caned like this one. Wait until it goes ex-divi, & watch it go down like Divine Brown. Best chance of getting out of this one alive is if they just wind it up & realise the NAV.

Recent falls mean this is now yielding roughly 9%. Anyone know what's behind it? Company seems fundamentally sound to me. I'm already a holder, but tempted to average down.

Greencoat have announced a placing of up to 500M new shares over the next 12 months to fund acquisitions & pay-down debt. They'll (initially) be offered at £1.33 p/share. This seems to be what's hit the price this-morning.

Sanibel, thanks for your insight. How do you feel the renewable energy sector would hold-up in a recession? I'd have thought, given its non-cyclical nature, that it would fare rather well: is that a reasonable expectation, do you think?

I'm looking for some (relatively) safe havens with stable dividends. This sector seems to fit the bill, but I suppose I'm looking for reassurance that it's a good call & I haven't missed anything.

I have kept some powder dry & I do have an under-performing investment on which I'm looking to cut my losses & re-invest elsewhere. If I can pick-up another investment in this sector without paying too much of a premium, I will.

I notice that the NextEnergy Solar fund has just dropped 5% recently. Not sure why it's done that, but it does present an opportunity to BTD. I'll also take a look at the US solar fund: that should give some geographical diversification. Good luck with your investment there.

If you look at renewable energy ITs on TrustNet, you'll see that pretty much the whole sector is trading at a healthy premium to NAVs. What's making them so popular ATM? I bought Greencoat Renewables at the start of the month & am already sitting on a nice rise, & have held UKW since flotation in 2013. Given the premiums to NAV, do people think now is a good time to cash-out of the sector (or at least take profits) & invest elsewhere, or has the sector got further to run? What would convince new investors to buy now & pay such a premium?

Just to answer my own question about whether or not this would prove a (relatively) safe haven when we enter the next recession: I've been looking at the 10-year performance graph (courtesy of H/L) &, having peaked in April 2009, the share price then fell 60% over the next 3 months (in the depths of the Financial Crisis). Not encouraging.

What I don't know, is whether or not there were specific reasons for this fall (rather than just the generic GFC fall guy claim) although, for comparison, Greene King suffered an approx. 45% fall over the exact same period. Maybe not as recession-proof as I was hoping.

Does anyone have any other thoughts on this?

I'd still be raising my average if I bought in now, but if it falls below £1.40 I'll have another fist full regardless.
