The announcement to do this phantom fortnightly study was made in the completion of C6 RNS on 19 September. Presumably the decision to do it had been taken some time before that morning and presumably also they didn't then spend weeks and weeks supping mugs of Yorkshire tea whilst the idea cogitated in their corporate consciousness but rather put the details together for the FDA to say nay or be mute. (Was there a self-imposed deadline at that time beyond the "in parallel with C7"?) How long does the FDA give itself to stop a trial variation proceeding? Would until the end of November be fair? Presumably Avacta and the clinicians would have been making all preparations so as to be able to start screening as soon as the stop period expired? So screening has now been going on for at least 7½ weeks and possibly for up to 3 months and the question is WHY???

Frustration for traders holding shares maybe but not for LTHs, for whom this is a buying opportunity. And for other traders to have a good entry point of course.

If Avacta have a patent application filed in relation to the AVA6000 study that they are not able to disclose for commercial reasons it will likely be a methods patent. Certainly not a novel compound (you couldn't add administering that to an existing trial without a lot of groundwork taking years). A cheaper way to make AVA6000 wouldn't be commercially sensitive at this stage of development (as no one else is making AVA6000). New indications isn't a possibility as the usefulness of AVA6000 is covered by the already declared need to have FAP present. That leaves methods for using AVA6000 - diagnostics for determining the suitability of patients (FAP level) for treatment (ex vivo so no human studies required) and means to analyse the activity of AVA6000 in patients (again, ex vivo using patient samples). Well, that's my opinion anyway.

Genuine question: Does being long, being short or trading have any influence on a biopharma company's prospects?

To my mind, the prospects will be determined by the quality of the IP and the competence of the company's management.

Affimers are small, single domain binding proteins which are based on (human) Stefin A or (plant) Cystatin A.◙Only Stefin A is used for TX and it should be easy to define TX use so I think the DX division could be split off fairly easily with Affimers licensed and perhaps the IP for Cystatin A ones also reassigned to the purchaser, which would greatly increase the immediate value of the DX division.
