No one knows for sure, but they believe the losses on companies caught short nickel will run into the tens of billions of dollars, JP Morgan must be looking at north of USD$10B loss, LME will remain closed until they can manufacture a carve-up and allow these companies the opportunity to escape at much lower prices.
It shines a light on how dirty metal trading (and commodity prices in general) has become, it’s not really a free market of Bid / Ask anymore. It also shows what happens when an unregulated paper market loses control and dives head long into the reality of the physical market, a lot of these commodities are in massive demand and very short in supply, if the games disappeared from the likes of the LME / CBoT everything would rocket in price and you’d have a geo political problem.
Wheat (or lack thereof) is probably going to be the next problem IMO…
