BG Group confirms light oil discovery in Brazil.
Shares in BG Group (LON:BG) surged 3.5% this morning after the FTSE 100 oil and gas producer confirmed a new discovery of light oil in Block BM-S-9 in the Santos Basin, offshore Brazil.
The discovery well 3-BRSA-861-SPS, informally known as Carioca North-East, is located about 275 kilometres off the coast of São Paulo state and nine kilometres north-east of the original Carioca discovery well.
Initial analysis has confirmed a light oil accumulation in a 200-metre reservoir section.
Drilling on Carioca North-East has been concluded and drill stem tests will be conducted in due course.
BG Group has a 30% interest in Block BM-S-9 which is comprised of two appraisal areas - Guará and Carioca.
Earlier this month, BG Group announced a tender for the charter of two further Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessels to be used in the full field development of the discoveries on blocks BM-S-9 and BM-S-11, in which BG holds a 25% interest.
Roughly a month ago, BG reported that the eleventh well on the BM-S-11 concession was successful, confirming the presence of a light oil accumulation.
Earlier in December, BG announced a discovery on Block 64/11 offshore China after the Lingshui 22-1-1 exploration well encountered gas-bearing sands.
