Looking good today though after the trading update: French Connection Group PLC ("the Group") announces that the profit before tax of its continuing operations1 for the year ended 31 January 2011 is expected to be at least £6.8 million (2010 restated: £1.0 million) as a result of a continuing strong performance in the wholesale division, growth in licensing income and good control of overheads. The trading performance in UK retail was in-line with our recent Interim Management Statement. ftseking may well be right after all, glad im still holding.

Not looking like a good decision at the moment, but you may be lucky in the long term. My views on this one are well known, as soon as i need some money this will be one of the first i sell. There aren't many other shares in my portfolio that have performed as badly as this one has over recent years. And it doesn't pay a div. ATB.

If RSA are currently 137p, and there's rumours of a take-over with, as you say, Aviva on the prowl, how does that make this a 'Strong Sell'??? Surely the smart money would be to stay and take the extra cash from said t/o, or am i missing something???

Or, as your name suggests, were you referring to HMV??? And the 92p special dividend is by way of a return of capital following a merger with GDF Suez, and not a normal dividend. As the sp will drop by roughly the same amount it can't really be classed as a return or a yield. We will end up with 80% of our investment in shares and 20% in cash, personally i would rather still have the full 100% invested.

Where do you get a return of 22% from???

That doesn't surprise me at all, it has become very expensive in its 200/250g size. Remember Coke brought in a 1.5l bottle when the 2l became so expensive, also lots of beers and lagers are now in cases of 18's and 15's instead of the once universal 24's. I'm so old i can remember cadburys from the early 60's when you could buy 1d, 2d and 3d bars. A real bar of CDM in foil with a paper sleeve for 1d - do you remember the good old £/s/d or are you far too young? - that's less than 0.5p in todays money!!! Am going off now to reminisce about all the good things from the 60's and 70's, sherbert fountains and penny liquorice, Aztec bars, Ice Breaker, all those wonderful penny sweets. If you only had 3d or 3p you could just buy 3 sweets for a treat, nowadays it's £1.99 for a 200g bag or go without!!

It never fails to surprise me how many of these big risers - 35% today - don't have any followers. There's a lot out there making bigger rises than a lot of the oils and mining stocks that everyone puts so much faith in!!!

The group said like-for-like sales in the UK and Ireland fell 7.7% in the 13 weeks to Jan 29. It warned that profits for the year to April will be below last year and lower than market expectations of around £26.3 million, as the firm admitted it has seen little respite from grim trading conditions.

Think you will find that most co's play the buy-back game to a greater or lesser extent. Not 100% sure on NG but fairly certain they do. What I did notice with the VOD one, apart from the sheer volume of the buy-back, was that they had put those shares into 'treasury' and not cancelled them like a lot of co's do. I guess they keep them there for Sharesave and DRIP divs - which i participate in - to save cancelling them and then having to re-issue for each div etc.

Citigroup raises International Power plc to buy from hold. This could well be a good buy-in price as IMHO i do not expect the sp to fall by the full 92p when this goes ex-div on 9/2. DYOR + ATB.

A broker downgrade to 'sell' today hasn't helped. I've never had a clue which way shares are about to move, so would never risk shorting, i would lose every time!! But you are a braver man than me, so better luck next time. ATB.
