The point is that VW may be able to buy third-party batteries and make a decent EV by todays standards but they cannot match Teslas' self-drive capabilities or other stuff. Where's the VW solar roof or VW Power Wall?

Tesla are sooo much more than an automaker. They are a software company, a battery manufacturer, a utility and domestic energy company.
They will win the autonomous vehicle race - then they will become a ride hailing company to rival Uber and a delivery company to rival Amazon and UPS.
Their sister company is SpaceX. They are sending thousands of Starlink satellites into orbit to provide global high speed internet services with massive bandwidth - they will be used to control their fleet of millions of autonomous vehicles and become the internet provider for the 'Internet of Things'

I hear what you're saying JulianM - Russia is risky. My hope is that they want to attract foreign investment , in the long term, and don't want to damage their reputation (as a good place to do business if nothing else) by shafting a small company that has discovered a large resource for them. Hold us up as a poster child instead.
