RE: Elon musk is concerned about Nickel!!13 Mar 2021 10:51
“LiDAR is a fool’s errand,” Musk said at Tesla’s recent Autonomy Day. “Anyone relying on LiDAR is doomed. Doomed! [They are] expensive sensors that are unnecessary. It’s like having a whole bunch of expensive appendices. Like, one appendix is bad, well now you have a whole bunch of them, it’s ridiculous, you’ll see.”
“LiDAR is lame,” Musk added. “They’re gonna dump LiDAR, mark my words. That’s my prediction.”
Tesla use cameras, feeding images to a neural network (for which they designed their own onboard computer)
There are billions of examples of this setup being used successfully today - humans amongst others.
When Teslas are driven with AutoPilot on, images are sent to a huge cloud based database. They have billions of miles, in different scenarios, from all over the world.
The data is then repeatedly feed into an AI, machine learning algorithm that refines the in car software. This is the Dojo project.
They then give regular over-the-air updates to their cars, just like your phone.
During Autonomy Day, Musk briefly mentioned the project ‘Dojo’:
“We do have a major program at Tesla which we don’t have enough time to talk about today called “Dojo”. That’s a super powerful training computer. The goal of Dojo will be to be able to take in vast amounts of data and train at a video level and do unsupervised massive training of vast amounts of video with the Dojo program – or Dojo computer.”
Tesla is moving FSD.
It may take a few more years BUT they are so far ahead of the competition that no one can catch them.
It's worth mentioning that this technology has many other applications.
