The World Health Organisation (WHO) has classified a new Covid variant, known as Arcturus, as an “interesting variant”, since it has significantly increased the number of infections in India.

After Covid-19 registered its highest daily case counts since September, the nation requested states to pinpoint emergency hotspots and intensify testing.

According to India’s health ministry, 7,830 additional Covid-19 cases were recorded on Wednesday (April 12), bringing the total number of active cases to 40,215. The health ministry also reported that there was no evidence of a rise in hospitalisations or fatalities but added that the prevalence of XBB.1.16 jumped from 21.6 per cent in February to 35.8 per cent in March.

Arcturus can be found in more than 20 nations, including the UK, Singapore, the US, Canada, and Australia.
