"A survey by Make UK and RSM UK found that investment intensity – investment spending as a percentage of manufacturers’ turnover – had fallen from 8.1pc last year to 6.8pc, in the latest blow to hopes of an industrial revival.

This was the worst year in the last decade apart from 2017, when investment fell sharply to 6.5pc after the vote to leave the European Union, before quickly recovering.

Make UK said British manufacturers were facing an “uncompetitive business environment” with high energy costs and rising taxes, and needed tax relief to meet a goal of investment matching other OECD countries.

It said that higher National Insurance contributions, capital gains and business rates had increased the tax burden on manufacturers."

Rhodium:

Over the past month, Rhodium's price has risen 12.20%, and is up 70.37% year-on-year.

Sibanye-Stillwater and Northampton Platinum Holdings are big listed miners, mining in South Africa.

Rhodium is primarily used in automotive catalytic converters to reduce harmful nitrogen oxides in exhaust, making this its largest industrial application.

"The CBI Distributive Trades Survey rose slightly to -27 in October 2025 from -29 in September, indicating UK retailers continued to report declining sales, with expectations for November worsening to -39. Despite the modest improvement, sales have now fallen for 13 consecutive months as consumer confidence remains weak. The CBI said shoppers are growing more cautious ahead of finance minister Rachel Reeves’ upcoming budget on November 26. Martin Sartorius, CBI principal economist, noted that uncertainty over fiscal policy is adding pressure on retailers still recovering from last year’s tax hikes and slow demand. He urged the government to rule out further business tax increases to restore confidence. Retailers also remain wary of planned employment rights legislation that could discourage hiring."

Russia massing nuclear fleet in Arctic circle ‘for war with Nato’ :

"Russia is amassing nuclear weapons and attack submarines in the Arctic Circle as it prepares for war with Nato, Norway’s defence minister has warned.

In an interview with The Telegraph, Tore Sandvik said Oslo had detected increased weapons development on Russia’s Kola peninsula, where its prized Northern Fleet and parts of its nuclear stockpile are based.

He also said that Vladimir Putin was trying to gain full naval control over the Arctic region so that he could block Nato allies’ access to two key shipping routes that would help resupply Western forces in wartime."

NEW DELHI, Oct 23 (Reuters) - Indian refiners are poised to sharply curtail imports of Russian oil, industry sources said on Thursday, following new U.S. sanctions on two major Russian producers aimed at squeezing Moscow's revenue to fund its war in Ukraine.

India has become the biggest buyer of discounted seaborne Russian crude in the aftermath of Moscow's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, importing about 1.7 million barrels per day in the first nine months of this year."

The enviroment, as you and i understand it, trees, fields, forests, waterways, wildlife, the countryside, are all just inconvenient planning obstacles to Miliband it seems.

More broadly, it sort of feels like they are just going to keep raising tax every year until the next election.

The tea-leaf readers seem to think around £25 billion this time, plus some fiscal headroom.

Inflation steady at 3.8% apparently, which simply doesn't correspond with peoples lived experience imo. Even so, it's way more than our peers where inflation is around half that.

The models the BoE, OBR etc use to predict economic trajectory are fundamentally flawed. Consistently overestimating to the upside, unleashing yet more spending which it later transpires wasn't affordable after all. The whole things a racket, lol.

"CHINESE IMPORTS TO GERMANY SURGE

Exports to China fell even more sharply than those to the United States, dropping 13.5% year-on-year to 54.7 billion euros in the first eight months of 2025.

By contrast, imports from China rose 8.3% to 108.8 billion euros.

"The renewed import boom from China is worrying," said Brzeski. "Particularly as data shows that these imports come at dumping prices."

He warned that this not only increased German dependence on China but could add to stress in key industries where China has become a major rival."

Clearly didnt learn their lesson with Russian gas.

GROC - GreenRoc Strategic Materials Plc has secured a €5.2 million loan facility from the Export and Investment Fund of Denmark (EIFO), according to a statement released Wednesday by Alba Mineral Resources plc (AIM:ALBA).

The binding secured loan will finance GreenRoc’s work programs at its Amitsoq Graphite Mine in south Greenland and support the establishment of a European pilot plant for producing active anode material from Amitsoq graphite.

Alba Mineral Resources, which holds a 25.78% stake in GreenRoc, described the financing agreement as "the most important milestone for GreenRoc since its IPO in late 2021" in the press release.
