European Commission data showed on Friday that there had been more optimism across all sectors of the economy and a sharp drop in inflation expectations in December.

The Commission’s monthly economic sentiment index rose to 95.8 in December from 94.0 in November, the first upward movement after a slide from a record high of 114.0 scaled in February, the month Russia invaded Ukraine.

Consumers, retailers ad the construction industry were also all more optimistic, signalling that the expected economic slowdown in the last three months of 2022 and the first three months of 2023 is likely to be a shallow one.

The wage portion of the jobs report should offer a bit of comfort to Federal Reserve policy makers, analysts and investors said.

"Fed Chair Powell should like what he sees in the jobs data given a moderating wage growth and uptick in worker participation rate," said Bryce Doty, senior portfolio manager at Sit Investment Associates, in emailed comments.

The addition of 223,000 jobs in December "is a good sign for helping further reduce supply chain problems. The 62.3% participation rate is slightly higher but still too far below pre-COVID levels," he said.

"The key though is average hourly earnings coming in at a mild 0.3% increase along with a 0.2% revision downward to last month down to 0.4%. We expect a modest relief rally given this data easing some of the Fed’s concerns concern on the tight labor market," he said.

From the FT: Since Christmas Eve, Europe has been sending more gas into its storage facilities than it has taken out of them, with storage levels increasing 0.28 per cent to Monday. Capacity stood at 83.2 per cent full as of December 26 — down from the mid-November high of 95.6 per cent, according to industry body Gas Infrastructure Europe.

Am just looking ahead as to if its worth me continuing to run a GIA under the new CGT limits (£3000!) as my trading style would make a tax return a bit of a nightmare to complete.

How to identify the shares disposed of

When you dispose of shares you cannot work out your capital gain or loss until you’ve matched the shares disposed of with shares you acquired. You’re treated as disposing of shares in the following order:

First Shares acquired on the same day as the disposal (the ‘same day’ rule).

Second Shares acquired in the 30 days following the day of disposal (the ‘bed and breakfasting’ rule) provided the person making the disposal was resident in the United Kingdom at the time of the acquisition.

Third Shares in the Section 104 holding.

If the above rules fail to exhaust the shares disposed of, the remaining shares are matched with later acquisitions, taking the earliest one first.

I had read that shares bought and sold on the same day would be "matched" for CGT purposes. So was thinking this would then exclude that transaction from getting tangled within the whole 30 day thing.

Wondering if anyone can confirm this for me?

If i buy 100,000 shares in company X in the morning, then sell 100,000 shares in company X in the afternoon of the same day - is this transaction treated in complete isolation form any future transactions for CGT purposes.

So for instance, the following day i could repurchase 100,000 shares in company X with a clean slate, without having to apply any share matching/30 day rule stuff?

The new CGT threshold is going to be a pain in the butt for a GIA.

If you are trading in and out of the same stock, the 30 day rule is a nightmare. At £3000 i expect HMRC are going to need more staff. It may even push more in CFDs.
