RE: extra shares.31 May 2019 15:22
Not sure if this helps but, ignoring dealing charges, if you buy 10,000 shares at £1 your book cost is obviously £10,000, if you then sell 5,000 shares at £2 your book cost is still based on what you originally paid for he shares, i.e. £1 each or £5,000 in total. Your original book cost will only change as a result of further purchases, so for example if you then go onto buy 5,000 shares at £5 a share your book cost becomes £30,000 for the 10,000 shares you now have (average £3 per share), which correctly does not take account of the £5,000 profit on the sale. If profits taken from sales were taken into account you could finish up with a minus figure as a book cost, which although okay for personal records, could become a headache for tax returns etc.
