What does this mean?
Currently, there isn’t an NHS lab-based service offering this genetic test in England. To
address this, NICE and NHS England are running a pilot project to test an early version
of the service. This pilot will take place at four sites in England, including Doncaster
and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH). The project is led by Dr. Ahmad Maatouk,
Stroke Lead, with support from specialists at the National Stroke Programme, NHS
England Genomics Unit and NHS Network of Excellence in Pharmacogenomics.
The main objective of the project is to design and test the first versions of a new end
to-end genetic testing service in the NHS to guide clopidogrel use after ischaemic
stroke or TIA. This includes understanding and developing workflows, clinical and
operational practicalities, laboratory requirements, and patient experience to inform
the broader rollout across the NHS.
NICE has recommended offering genetic testing to people who have recently had an
ischaemic stroke or a mini-stroke (TIA). However, they suggest starting this testing in
stages, beginning with patients at higher risk of having another stroke, such as those
who have had more serious strokes. During the pilot, we’ll focus on high-risk patients,
including those who’ve had a TIA or a stroke with minimal disability. The first tests will
