RE: John Simpson Unspun World - Ukraine2 Jul 2023 07:33
NATO was part of ISAF, an international coalition under UN mandate. The negotiated withdrawal and end to the anti-terrorism Taliban campaign was based on the Afghan army having control over most of the country but the army rapidly fell away as ISAF left. That was outside NATOs mandate.
First, NATO has no presence in Ukraine. Second, Russia has no mandate to obtain Ukrainian territory by force or other means, third Ukraine were defending themselves against a de facto Russian invasion since 2014 and have shown no sign of falling away like the Afghan army, indeed it has been quite the opposite.
All these analogies the Putin apologists keep trying to come up with are meaningless. If Russia is so sure of it's claim, then why doesn't it simply get a UN resolution instructing Ukraine to hand over it's territory to Russia and the rest of the rest of the world to withhold material defensive support?
Exactly, Russia has no grounds for such a request, there are no analogous comparisons with anything NATO forces and wider coalitions have been involved in and the decade of war crime tribunals will demonstrate this to an extent even the likes of BSR will have to concede.
And if the Taliban attempt to launch or sponsor any attacks against the US, you bet ya the Americans will be back with major bombardments of Taliban assets. They may have withdrawn under agreement, but the Taliban must keep the agreement or else.
