Officially the Russians fighting are classed as volunteers - which is why it is not supposed to be called a war. It is why the rebellions in the ranks are not court martialed, because it is defined as an operation not war. They get a disonourstamp on their record. Therefore it might be difficult to assemble a specialised trained crew to transport, store, load, arm and launch the tactical nukes. Also, as they are classified as volunteers, they can refuse to carry out orders. If Putin suddenly upgrades to 'war' then you can expect nukes. They are not anywhere near the theater yet. Nato [and others] know exactly where they are and when they are mobilised. There would be major noises out of the nato capitals and China if the battlefield nukes were being moved within the range of Ukraine.

If fact, I would not want to be in the launch crew of a Russian tactical launch group. Once the firing pin is released the missile would probably be armed and fail to launch but the clock continue counting down. Pointless running if you happened to have one that dos go critical. Russia battlefield nukes are old, not maintained and decayed, the bigger monsters 'might' have been maintained. For the small battlefield ones, the fissile material has decayed over the decades and most shells would likely not go critical. Most of those that do will have reduced, and very much reduced, yields such they cease to be effective. You then have all the old soviet cheapo hardware, relays and switches that have rusted over, insulators that have broken down, plastics that have depleted integrity and a whole heap of issues that would prevent launch and successful detonation. If Putin launches nukes but they fail or have very limited yield he will have played his ace and lost. He knows using the larger ICBMs will result in a full nuclear response from maintained systems with maintained and upgraded warheads. Things are not what they seem on the nukes front. A lot of the kit is cold war era, getting on for at least, AT LEAST, 40 years old!

There are far too few trades with such a huge spread to trust what is going to happen. Has all the hallmarks for me of a shock drop. If it is a shock spike, wow brilliant. Why so scared?
