From the latest Putin giveaway on the real intentions, it seems Putin looks at Russian 'retraction' from what was the extent of the USSR and blames the wet and NATO rather than accepting that when the oppression of the Soviet system was lifted, the USSR satellite states were show to have retained over the 40 years very strong associations with their former selves and in fact Russia had not been absorbed into all those cultures. As the post cold war developed and Russia slow regressed toward Soviet practices, the old satellite states migrated towards the west, in the guise of the then EU and NATO. Some have found themselves trapped in a new Soviet, an EU Soviet, and do have troubles with that. Otherwise many joined NATO for security against Russia.

This all sums up to a major and repeated rejection of Russia. Given how big and important Putin thinks Russia is, it has clearly been taken personally and his ventures on the battlefield have been designed to bolster his increasingly delusional fantasy. The shambles and outright failure in Ukraine points to what Russia has diminished too, and Putin is further personally humiliated. He fights on pis'sing in the wind because he has no facility to accept reality.

And that is why I firmly believe it will be the Russian generals that will suddenly without warning stop the war and light the fuse leading back to the NT under the Kremlin. And I do expect the Russian generals to march all Russian forces, including so called separatists, out of all Ukraine territory as a historical marker of Putin's folly and the fact territory was lost, not gained.

Oh I think you will find the formal sanctions will be around for a long time, years. As for the informal sanctions based on trust with Russia, that will be decadele now. And even if states wanted to restore trade and cooperation, you can't force the private companies to deal with tic Russian companies. Things were already a bit ify dealing with Russia with the corruption. Now Russia is simply toxic and will be treated as such even by businesses in so called friendly countries such as India and China. As with Europe, there are significant differences in policy from the supranational ideology to the private companies and individuals.
