RE: National Infrastructure Strategy: Government to deliver 'revolution' tied to net-zero27 Nov 2020 07:49
There is a plan to replace all gas fired boilers in houses by 2030. What happens to gas transmission and distribution ?
The government plan identifies hydrogen networks which is possibly the solution but will take significant investment and time to introduce nationwide. Hynet is perhaps the largest pilot project for this in the UK.
My view is that power/energy generation will become more localised moving away from macro distribution to micro generation. Look at Hynet. The concept works. Same applies to Julich living lab.
If that is the way we go, which in my opinion is perhaps better route it is ideal for companies like AFC, ITM, CWR, PHE, EQT etc where their equipment can be used to generate and utilise hydrogen at a local level and help with a circular economy, wasting nothing and providing what required within the community. It is not so good for transmission reliant on moving mass amounts of energy around the country.
Larger scale operations are more likely to sell energy through PPAs which is exactly what SAE aim for with tidal power and Uskmouth resulting in short transmission and power agreement for the design life of a project. This way the UK could be self sufficient much quicker and avoid huge/massive infrastructure upgrades at significant cost.
