Not entirely true. You need to check even for quite modern cars.

There is a government website that supposedly tells you if your vehicle can take the higher ethanol fuel....I didn't find the website helpful, it said go check my car manual.

Why are the car manufacturers simply trying to replace the petrol engine with an electric motor and not thinking more radically?....I guess because their current business plan was working and they are simply trying to adapt it as little as possible. Making radical changes is risky. They know what sells, they know what is easier to market & sell. The TopGear mentality..."faster is better" is very appealing to consumers.
IMO the big shift in consumer habits may happen when driverless cars become readily available and UBER starts to use them....not so good for UBER drivers unfortunately.

Getafgrip, I have seen video's of the problems high ethanol fuel causes on petrol engines. Presumably 'sensible' people will drain the fuel from their engines prior to winter storage....but it isn't very easy. Motorbikes, classic cars, lawnmowers etc etc. Good business for the repair people called in the spring to get them working!!....perhaps there is some additive that can be put into the fuel prior to storage to reduce the problem.

I suppose people should be switching to electric lawnmowers anyway.

The changing buying patterns of car buyers is part of that equation. Holding onto a car - not getting new every 3-4 years - is probably environmentally positive too. But car manufacturers are unlikely to sit on their hands and allow that to happen. There will be plenty of advertising to entice people to 'go electric', there will be incentives (e.g. charging points installed free in homes) and probably most importantly is to lower the price of EV's through volume manufacturing.

Boyobach, I suspect someone has already corrected your misunderstanding. The individual cells are low voltage (LV) but they are stepped up to create very high voltages to drive the motors....so they are very dangerous. Not something to to be tinkering with by a DIY enthusiast....unless they want to be nearer to god.

Hhhhmmm. But in little more than a few years the only car for sale in UK will have to be powered without a diesel or petrol internal combustion engine.....and you seriosuly believe that car manufacturers won't invest in green technologies?

Getafgrip, an excellent post (if you don't mind me saying). This 'green' revolution isn't totally green. Sometimes going green is more nuanced.
I believe a new fuel is about to be introduced in UK with 10% ethanol.....it won't work in all cars btw. BUT using more ethanol is 'greener' than using fuel with 5% ethanol, saving thousands of tonnes of CO2. Go figure.
From an investors point of view. Don't buy property at sea level....or buy a boat.

What is obvious is that there will be a huge bill to pay...and the bill is still increasing by the day.

There will imo be tension between No. 10 that likes to make big promises and No. 11 that has to balance the books....and pay for the largesse of his neighbour.
Ironically Sajid Javid lost his previous job by refusing to a takeover by Cummings & Boris. He is now back on the team....possibly with a few scores to settle.

I imagine there is pressure - either direct or indirect - to give people as much time as possible to 'sort themselves out'. Isn't that what the furlough to some extent is all about....the number crunchers probably expect a certain % of jobs to be unviable once furlough ends but by continually extending it they hope the economy recovers enough to make that % relatively small.

To some extent we all have our heads in a bucket of sand - Ostrich fashion - hoping that when the pandemic finally ends and we have to pay the bill, it won't be too bad....but we know it will be...who the EFF ordered those magnums of Petrus & the Beluga caviar???!!!???

The concept (I presume) is that you don't own the batteries, they are (I presume) rented. One of the benefits is probably that the car will always have a fully functional & maintained battery in place....the onus of maintaining the batteries & replacing faulty cells would fall on the company (say Shell) who operate the battery swapping service.
One obvious benefit is that the fear of being hit with a £10,000 charge for replacing the batteries - in an otherwise perfectly working vehicle - when they reach end of life would disappear. Your batteries would always be in tip top shape a la 'Trigger's Broom'.

There may even be an option - possible quite expensive - to change the wife for a newer model at the same time the batteries are being changed!! I may copyright the idea.

No seriously DTN, either you don't understand how the technology works or you are pulling my leg. The batteries are accessible from underneath the car....car is lifted up to give robotic arms access to the underneath of the car which remove the battery modules (there is more than one) for fully charges units. So your wife and her messy interior do not need to be disturbed.

SteveBT, thanks for answering the question I never got round to answering. i.e. Why are Shell investing so much - money & hype - into EV charging stations?

Unfortunately this 'investment' could be just PR nonsense to promote Shell's green credentials. EV's are so revolutionary that the industry & people's habits are unlikely to conform to the old 'petrol' station centric business model....they can charge an EV vehicle up anywhere e.g. whilst having a haircut or shopping at a supermarket. The EV will not be tied to a 'petrol' station.

I saw a program on TV about EV battery replacement i.e. car pulls up with low juice and gets a full battery replacement - automatically by machines - and drives away in a matter of minutes fully charged. Now that is something that Shell could operate on motorways I suppose....but the 'upselling' opportunity could be limited, especially IF the customer stays in the vehicle (as they would in a car wash).
Interesting times.

When is the next set of figures due?....needs something to indicate TRMR is still heading in the right direction, a reminder that the positive outlook hasn't changed.

Mr A, thanks for the kind words. I agree that Alistair Strang is worth reading & 'probably' has some valid points. However I assumed - possibly incorrectly - that chartists viewed the data dispassionately....the 'chart was the chart'! Mr Strang seems a little different....he appears to be superimposing his views that the SP is going to rise onto the data...is that normal for a chartist.

I may be misinterpreting the article but that's the feeling I got. If that is the case then Mr Strang's value as a chartist could be impaired because a true chartist doesn't let sentiment get in the way, they always follow the data....or perhaps he is only human.

Do people still rob banks using a sawn off shotgun with a getaway car waiting outside....presumably before they are chased by the Sweeney and banged up in gaol?!

Mr A, Alistair Strang is a strange man. So we now know he has sentimental feeling towards hinges....I must admit that I am quite attached to stainless steel butterfly hinges (but we aren't dating yet!!).
I don't quite understand his logic that 'reasonable' movement equates to the SP just 'going up'....surely there are some traders who manage to make money from a falling share price.

PS I'm not exactly sure why he is called an 'analyst' in the article....he is a chartist surely, which far better describes his area of expertise (IMO).
