".... in Spain for example the locals have to do without olive oil and hams as the reduced supply gets too expensive and the increasingly wealthier Chinese now pay the higher prices "
=============================================================
PC, the danger is that if one becomes too heavily reliant on imports of basic foodstuffs (& other commodities) you become subject to regional climate issues and sometimes political inteference (e.g. Russian control of Ukrainian wheat exports).
There will inevitably come a time when the people who live in a food exporting region cannot afford to buy the food they export they will demand that the exports are reduced to feed them....it is when access to & membership of a common market becomes a benefit.
Happened in Spain in 17th century I think.....they also had plague. Deja Vu!
The danger is that inflation gets 'baked in'....wages increase to match inflation, food prices have to rise because of increasing staff costs, profiteering a tiny bit perhaps because people expect it & are very brand loyal.
"....how can they have a forecast swing 0.7% inside a month ? "
============================================================
I guess they have a model that helps them make forecasts and 'perhaps' some of the inputs have changed dues to new information....or perhaps things like the budget?
Or perhaps they found someone new to pin the tail on the donkey.
Are we talking about Eamonn Holmes?....he's rather odd anyway, I'm not sure I would trust what he says as 100% accurate.
Long list of 'controveries' on Mr Holme's wikipeidia profile.....although 'perhaps' he is right that 5G masts caused Covid?!?...perhaps!!
I don't mind ITV diversifying but I would like to know the thinking of the management. Is it an investment fund managed at arms length? It would be concerning to me if management time & effort was being spent on making such investments, when they should be concentrating on the core business.
As some have suggested it is probably a way leveraging the advertising power of ITV for 'hopefully' very little management effort. But classed as window dressing IMO....ITV enters the dragon's den as one of the dragons!
The days of diversified conglomerates has mostly gone, it's all about concentrating on what you do best.
Why is ITV investing in PitPat?.....something about putting trackers on dogs!
"Putin going? "
===================================
Don't tell me he's gonna take over from Phillip Schofield on 'This Morning'?!
Perhaps TRMR should hire Meghan Markle as an PR consultant.....she certainly has a knack for getting attention.
"Finally Trupcard and I are in agreement! "
=============================================
I'm not sure I would admit if my thinking agreed with Trumpcard. I would probably need to lie down or consult a doctor!
"Supply and demand - there is a shortage of train drivers right now such that, even in the reduced demand after covid, the various rail unions can use the shortage of supply to make greater demands."
================================================
Perhaps Suella could start training them.
Seriously, I think it isn't a 'supply & demand' issue with train drivers. It is a closed shop. They are heavily unionised...and they know when they strike they will get what they demand. So simply training more drivers wouldn't break the power of the union....unless you could prevent newly qualified drivers from joining the union.
"Perhaps we allowed them to extradite the wrong Lynch"
===================================================
DfLynch, perhaps we should extradite anyone with the name Lynch....just to be sure!
"Just because the Dame came with an expensive price tag it does not make her the most capable person to run ITV......Sack the Board. Sack the CEO"
==========================================================
Tom suppose you got your wish & she went, doesn't mean you would get anyone better. ...OK, they might have a better suit.
I haven't heard much from anyone on what she should be doing differently. Everyone agrees that ITVX has been a bit of a success.....or not a total disaster (which is what we have become used to in the UK).
It looks to me like some people want a change at the top in the hope someone new would perform a miracle.
Tricky, are you seriously telling me you read the judgement?....it runs to over 700 pages (presumably with lots of legal jargon).
I'm not sure cutting huge numbers of staff is an option at ITV. Someone has got to make the tea for the celebrities!
Making TV & film content requires large numbers of highly skilled & specialised employees.
The management could do it out of desperation but in the long term I expect it would have negative consequences. Perhaps with the advent of AI it might be possible to streamline certain processes but I don't think we are there yet.
"Yes! Autonomy was a British data firm. "
=================================================
Tricky, I'm not a legal expert but assuming Autonomy had assets in USA that the UK parent company overstated in value then Mr Lynch could be liable in the USA for any crimes committed there....hence presumably the extradition request.
As to your second point I don't think it would be a good defense for him to use that he was allowed to do the alledged things because HP did something similar. If what HP did was illegal then surely Mr Lynch would be in legal jeopardy too. In fact he would 'probably' be admitting to the crime....I suppose he could use it in mitigation IF he is found guilty in USA.
"If you were buying a 'home' in a different country and were misled, should the (so-called) burglar be brought to your country to be prosecuted?"
==========================================================
Was Autonomy purely a UK company at the time of the sale?.....if the law was broken in UK then he would face justice here. If laws were broken in USA then he would be extradited there to face justice.
I suspect the argument against the extradition treaty with the USA is that it might be rather one sided, but since I don't know the statistics I cannot comment. Judges here have concluded that he can be extradited. He has the money to get the best defence team, so if he is innocent then he will find a way to prove it. I suppose he could bung Clarence Thomas a few bucks just to be sure!
Tom, good to see you aren't advocating a sale of the Studio business....well, at least not on the cheap.
The story about the sale of the Studio business was probably used to highlight the 'hidden' value in the business. I too doubt she ever intended to sell some or all of it.
I'm sure there are things that can be done to improve revenue & profits but some of it is probably the advertising cycle....so we will just have to wait for things to improve. Build it and they might come.
Tom, so your advice to Carolyn would be to sell the family silver....which would presumably make her quite wealthy and add a few bucks to your stash. I'm sure day traders would be over the moon if she gave away the Studio business but I expect long term holders would be aghast.
Think I read yesterday that Warren Buffet says good business advisors was a pre-requisite for success. Hopefully Carolyn is getting good advice.....and not listening to forums.
"If auditors are doing their job correctly it should be impossible to deceive them."
==========================================
Tricky, almost sounds like you think he's guilty.
Personally I blame the homeowner who got burgled for not having a better alarm system.
"If management genuinely believe that LGEN is that undervalued then they should be buying back significant numbers of shares"
======================================================
Exactly. How about using some of the dividend money to buy back shares?...so investors would have a decent income through the dividend and a rising EPS & share price. It isn't rocket science.
Obviously increasing revenue & profits shouls also be on the agenda.
Seems to me the management are missing a trick here.
