"Given the recent increase in share price, does that not mean the shares in treasury are now worth more than they paid for them, because they haven’t been cancelled."
========================================================
The 'worth' of the treasury shares would surely depend on the average price they paid for them (something I do not know).
It is also rather academic...because if in the future they are cancelled then their 'worth' is zero.
Currently have 23 million shares in treasury, with 135 million ordinary shares. So if they were to sell those treasury shares then that would effectively be a seller offloading 14% of the company....quite a drag on the SP I would imagine.
I don't really see what they can do with the shares apart from cancelling them. But perhaps they will find a way to sell them and give the cash to shareholders as a special dividend.
