17.03.2020 - Jacob Barratt qPCR - Primerdesign Ltd
"I'm happy to announce that after a huge effort from the UK Primerdesign team PHE have trialled our
Covid-19 qPCR detection kit (CE-IVD marked) which performed perfectly.
PHE have placed an initial order for 1,200 kits (thats over 115,000 individual tests) for use in 8 of their
major testing hubs throughout the UK."
115200 / 1200 = 96 tests per test kit, ((COVID-19) genesig® Real-Time PCR assay Instructions for use, confirms 96 tests per kit) https://www.genesig.com/assets/files/Path_Coronavirus_COVID_19_CE_IVD_IFU_Issue_10.pdf?timestamp=1582079599
1200 kits = £1,000,000 order = £833.33 for each test kit.
£833.33 / 96 = £8.68 per test.
++++++
£8.68 / test is what Primerdesign receives for making the test themselves, of which around 80% is profit.
Since then there have been a number of companies that have:
a) made components of the kits (Yourgene)
b) subcontract manufacture of the kit in Dresden (BioType Diagnostic GmbH)
c) Recently announced partners to manufacture kits, who have delivered nothing yet - such as
BioPharma Process Services Ltd, and Biofortuna Limited.
Obviously Primerdesign does not make 80% profit when these companies present their invoices.
Yet many posters are still using £8.68 or are rounding it up to £10 profit / kit.
Please be mindful of the above costs, and also those of the new specialist in rapid process improvement, - Chartwell Consulting.

16.03.2020 RNS:
Following the completion of Public Health England's (PHE) formal evaluation of Primerdesign's COVID-19 test, as announced on 12 March 2020, the government agency has commenced ordering the test. Orders are initially for eight hospitals to provide stocks in those locations for four weeks of planned testing. The total value of the initial purchase is approximately £1.0 million.
+++++
So we should be hearing more from PHE after the end of the four weeks of planned testing, and any further orders PHE might have.
