I held this for a while and was thinking about repurchase.
Unfortunately I can't make sense of this repurchase.
Firstly, location - the company's HQ is currently in the UK, so this is a fairly radical move. Maybe it makes sense to relocate to SG but the rationale put forward is short on specifics.
Also, one of the attractions for me in relation to ALY was their cash generation and cash pile. It's quite a different risk/reward now (although to be fair the debt is not huge and has a freehold property as security).
Finally, as someone has already mentioned, does it really make sense for Laura Ashley to own a property like this? Doesn't it make more sense for a retailer to rent their HQ on a long lease than to tie up capital in this way?
If the company felt like cash was burning a hole in their pocket, I'd have preferred to see greater investment in the brand, in advertising, in their products and in their stores. It feels like they haven't done much with the brand for quite a while and that's the direction I wanted to see them moving in.
I'm still a potential buyer but probably not with enough conviction at this price.
