Yes Mr Remmy - doing it the way done by the big Dalian battery is going to take up less space as their is basically only a single enclosure for the whole thing and you can use larger tanks, site equipment over 3 or more floors, etc. Still, space is not the issue for stationary energy storage - and even 280,000 x 40 foot containers only takes up less land area (10 sq km) than a SINGLE concentrating solar power facility (Ivanpah 14 sq km)

Richken - sorry 'All of them is an underestimation' - the point is that as more PV comes into the mix the diurnal variation in electrical energy demand that's not PV would get greater - so more PV would mean more peaker plants having to be built.

Note - it's still a low cost to build new PV AND new gas peakers rather than taking the point of view 'well if you've got to build the gas plants anyway why don't you just keep them on all the time' - the point is that gas costs money and sunlight doesn't. But I digress...

At the moment there is only 2.5% of US electrical energy produced by PV.

According to this ( https://nrel.gov/docs/fy19osti/74184.pdf ) paper by the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory a mix of 4, 6 and 8 hour batteries could displace 75 Gigawatts of Gas Peaker Plants.

That is an energy storage of:

4 hour batteries : 30 GW x 4 hours = 120 GWh
6 hour batteries : 10 GW x 6 hours = 60 GWh
8 hour batteries : 35 GW x 8 hours = 280 GWh

The 8 hour batteries own this market.

Speaking of the US who would be curious to find out how much of their gas peaker plants they could displace with an 8 hour battery system ?

Kevkan - presumably we are not going to be given them anything until it has had the vanadium taken out - this means that it would have been magnetically separated so is likely to be very much higher than the 57% concentration that Ophidian quotes for the Fe2O3 contained within the 63.2Million Tonnes of the Indicated resources
