This is in the main down to the very high percentage of value that comes from the Vanadium in the VRFB battery concept. What some have considered a weakness, is actually critical to establishing a fully integrated and highly sustainable energy storage value chain.

to follow up on this - this is just one of the types of improvements, yet to be commercially introduced, have the potential to make VRFBs cheaper and/or more efficient. There is so much further for VRFBs to go that has barely been touched upon yet. Furthermore it's not the sort of development that takes tens of millions of dollars in research, development and production setup - one of the companies I saw that was working on membrane technology was a small 2-3 man band in switzerland. Another is larger and based just outside of Glasgow.

dubmaskullanga - I didn't see any of those types of membrane for sale yet but I understand that Rongke Power are familiar with them.

There is some work going on in the area of membranes - some of this was on display at last years IFBF in Lyon. Dupont make the standard one Nafion and could supply it a lot cheaper if only a VRFB company would go to them and ask for a really large amount. I suggested to them that perhaps the VRFB manufacturers should group together and buy en masse. The Dupont guy was not at all put out by the idea and thought it worth encouraging.

There's others making more specialist membranes to reduce the diffusion of water through the membranes (Vanadium ions crossing from one side to the other is not really a problem, unlike every other sort of flow battery where it reduces the overall storage capacity).

Rongke power of course make their own membranes and are not therefore behoven to western companies.

Well perhaps people would like to tell me what they would do if they had only 9 months to run on an offtake agreement that was tied to the European V2O5 price.

having spent 30 minutes at the International flow battery forum discussing the dynamics of Vanadium pricing with Professor Huamin Zhang, Chief Engineer of Rongke power I can confidently assert that the Chinese were not aware of what had driven the price down post Nov 2018.
