bassguy - not all mines are equal. One of the key points about the BMN Vametco minigrid is that it is strongly grid tied - this means that it can be charged TWICE per day.

To get the stored energy you need to know what the average duration of all of those batteries is - given that longer duration batteries are going to be needed for peak shifting a 4 hour average is not unreasonable. This then gives you 600 GWh

Bushveld in ground resources contain 1.46 Million tonnes at Vametco and over 2 Million tonnes at Mokopane

There is little point engaging with him, or any people like that. They don't know anything about physics or engineering but what they do know is that they don't want anything being pushed by anyone who cares about the environment because they feel that would challenge their own economic position.

Once they realise that they can change their economic position, by for example, buying shares in a company such as Bushveld, that is key to the whole large scale energy storage industry, they will suddenly change their minds. They are reacting emotionally because they feel locked out of the energy transition revolution and so react like luddites. What we need to do is explain that there's more than just the hypewash of Tesla out there and that, for once, those in the UK have got a marvellous opportunity sitting on their own doorsteps.

So come on be a patriot and buy Bushveld !

BubbyHuxter - I think that their initial interest was along the lines of 'as a big manufacturer of petrochemicals how can we get our paws on this flow battery stuff ?' - the trouble is that the precise nature of the stuff they pump out of the ground, namely that it is highly inflammable, is precisely why nobody is going to be making any electrolyte with that stuff. They may have to do a quick about turn in their strategy and start to embrace aqueous electrolytes, which of course can not burn.

faramog and CF - well I can tell you that Shell know about VRFB's for sure, they had one of their guys sitting in on the UK Redox Flow Battery network meeting lats year. Nominally to push some project for organic electrolytes (i.e. inflammable) but I bet the real reason is to keep an eye on the VRFB industry. The chap took quite a few notes when I was briefly summarising some of the work going on in that space. I think that he also was present at the UK energy storage conference that was in Newcastle around the same time.
