And it seems very likely there would already be significant microbial release of iron into the coastal area rich in mineral sands.

Which suggests that you may be overplaying this particular concern for some reason - although I would not want to discount it completely.

Alba have taken the step of environmental assessment this season at TBS - including Fauna, so we will find out in due course.

They breed/mate in winter months so only an issue if activity disrupts beaches where they stay with calves or interferes with feeding - shell fish beds.

My understanding is that in many areas around Greenland many Walrus populations have been lost, probably permanently , where there is already established persistent human activity/occupation.

There is so much irony in your post plappers, it is almost worth mining.

I had assumed it was mostly fluvoglacail type deposits that built up as melt water streams and rivers blocked and changed course but could be way off - placer deposits are mentioned in the link below near the end but don't think that actually excludes being re-deposited by the tides etc.

My main point though was that the raised beaches make up most of their areas of interest and are up to 40m above the shoreline, so layered removal is in little danger of being covered by storms etc.

Mmm possibly wont claim to be an expert but I thought that description is specific to the active beaches at the shoreline.

I thought the raised beaches were "placer" deposits directly from the source rocks/formations.

That should only happen where areas are excavated that tidal activity would cover, so would effect non permafrost areas also, as already mentioned you would not just dig it all out in one go.

They are mostly assessing raised beaches above normal tidal movements - the deposits come from the Dundas formations on land, not from the sea.

Yes you could do it in stages potentially - but you might not come back to layers exposed in season 1 until season 3 which would be used to gauge how much more is there and so on.

On the one hand I cannot find an example of mineral sands being extracted in this way - perhaps a near unique scenario, but on the other, if you think about it, that is how it is done without permafrost really.

The issue would be keeping the market updated and supportive as the resource estimate would have to recalculated in stages.

Saying all that I think they would be happy to prove something up they so they could sell it off.

I think they want to develop and run with hhdl and Clogau but prove up and sell Greenland licences.

2 things I have been thinking about (this is speculative and not based on any particular research).

1. What is now Permafrost may not remain so in the years ahead (global warming a worry but may effect the situation in Thule at some point). Timescales may be too long to be relevant.

2. In theory you could expose the permafrost as you mine the top layers - in theory the exposed areas would thaw during summer and be permafrost no more. Primitive gold miners did this in some Northern climates when digging for gold or trying to locate/follow the pay streak.

The effect of iron released from Ilmenite is not that straight forwarded as far as I can see (especially in sea already "sorting" mineral sands / sediment).

I believe Alba have also previously mentioned off shore potential.

Clearly the current focus is on what they perceive to be the most accessible areas of interest to get some sort of resource estimate in place.

10km is not insignificant - really good progress, fingers crossed.

Probably rose tinted glasses but becoming more interested in Clogau.

I think most recent interviews suggests getting planning permissions and the mine open are the prime objectives - they must be hopeful of that to go through this but like others have indicated, not my favourite Alba asset either, but will be very happy to be proven wrong.

I don't follow Boku that closely but their Sp flying - up 50% over last couple of months.

Anyone clocked any specific newsflow that is fuelling that?
