Han**** tells Commons about proposed rapid Covid-19 test
Matt Han**** has also been updating MPs about a proposed new rapid coronavirus test - that can also pick up winter illnesses, and can be administered by non-healthcare professionals.

If trials are successful, the new test will provide "on-the-spot results in under 90 minutes, helping us to break chains of transmission quickly".

He added: "These tests do not require a trained health professional to operate them, so they can be rolled out in more non-clinical settings."

I'm not sure if this is something advised from the manufacturer of the tests or the machine or indeed from the organisation running the test. I would have thought azn and novacyt would have been all over this with their collaboration

It's this line - "Fluorescence intensity is recorded at each cycle of the PCR by the Real-Time PCR machine."
i've never ran a PCR machine before but it sounds like the machine can pick up on which cycle the test was initially marked positive. i.e. positive result was first recorded at cycle 15 (heavy viral load) or positive test was recorded at cycle 42 (low viral load or dead rns fragments).

They could well have a point however it looks like the PCR machine detects this. Primerdesign FDA documention

hamster, Usain, i do think this is something missing from the company. getting this message across to the media. not having a cheap pop at the company but this needs to be "sold" as a solution for healthcare and possible covid/flu outbreaks

they need a test to distinguish between covid and flu so they know how to treat the patients. i think people are forgetting that flu is a killer specially for the elderly and people with under lying conditions.
covid hit us as we were coming out of flu season. If we get hit with covid and flu specially if the flu season this year is as bad as 2014/15 then they really need to know what they are dealing with at the earliest opportunity to tailor the treatment.

websolut, yes it looks like singular machines to perform the test. sounds a bit similar to DNAnudge. It does sound ideal for more remote parts.

The scientists are looking for the best tests that they can rely on however that isn't always what the politicians are looking for. They are playing the numbers game so need as many tests they can get to push up the numbers. The US have made noises about needing millions per day. The issue of accurate testing is tomorrows problem for some of the politicians.

Thanks Anders i had spotted that. Also it's nasal swab so it's not quite the fast, spit based accurate test that some people are thinking.
You can't get away from the requirement for accurate testing. I know the NCYT covid test is good for saliva based testing but i'm waiting on it being used on mass.

Usain, it's doesn't mention how many gene targets for influenza. Not sure if it's singular gene for each type or if it's targeting more than one gene.

Its a one stop test for healthcare professionals to understand what virus they are dealing with. Very useful!
