Coronavirus has certainly been a wake-up call for us to restore domestic manufacturing capacity and not be reliant on others for essential items.

Kjs, well done on finding Avacta while it’s still early days! To answer your questions, the only lateral flow text developed by ODX is an antibody test - one that tests whether you have previously had Covid as opposed to an antigen test which shows whether you have it now and are infectious to others - regardless of whether you have symptoms. It is accurate antigen testing that will get us out of lockdown. Porton Down is the government’s scientific facility where all such tests are authenticated. The current Avacta test has passed Porton Down early stage testing with flying colours and is now undergoing validation with a much larger number of real life cases. Concurrently, it is applying for the CE Mark for sale in the EU. We expect to hear about that during March. As you can tell from the video, Alastair Smith is very confident. Exciting times!

* Northern Ireland retains the need for a CE mark for new goods to market - unlike the rest of the U.K.

It seems that post-Brexit, it is the UKCA (UK Conformity Assessed) marking that it is the new UK product marking that is used for goods being placed on the market in Great Britain (England, Wales and Scotland). It covers most goods which previously required the CE marking.

Interesting to note that Northern Ireland retains the requirement to rest of U.K.

This raises the interesting possibility that Avacta is having to get a CE mark in order to have a Sovereign test that can be used in Northern Ireland!

As a hardened Avacta investor (but also with some skin in the game here), please be aware that clinical validation does not always follow the optimistic timescales envisaged by the inventors of the test. In fact it can be a frustratingly long-winded and bureaucratic process.
