These tests have been good enough for UK citizens to use for the past 6 months, so our unwanted stockpiles should be a welcome gift to countries like India in lieu of foreign aid. It's like the vaccines - we wanted our population made safe first. Same should apply to use of highly accurate lateral flow tests to unlock the economy. Guarantee our supply first - as soon as possible and as many as possible and educate the public about how these tests are different - effective and non-invasive.

To ask Her Majesty's Government how many COVID-19 test kits manufactured in China have been purchased for use in the UK; what those kits have cost; and what capacity there is in the UK for the production of such kits.
Answer from Lord Bethell
As of 14 May 2021, more than 1 billion self-test and assisted lateral flow devices (LFDs) manufactured in China have been purchased for use in the United Kingdom. We are unable to provide the cost of these kits as this information is commercially sensitive. A gradual increase in the proportion of UK-produced self-test LFDs is anticipated by the summer.

So a stockpile of a billion tests!

Given that nobody knows what's left of the Innova orders, what's to stop the Gov from designating them as foreign aid and shipping them off to e.g. India? Meanwhile we crack on with rolling out the superior UK-developed and manufactured test. Several advantages to this - 1) answers the critics of foreign aid cuts 2) answers the mounting criticism within parliament of money spent on Chinese tests instead of home-produced ones 3) permits shift in the UK to test to release rather than test to isolate 4) re-opens safe travel and hospitality.

From his recent round of interviews, DM seems very aware of the importance of regular newsflow on the progress of the drill. I find it difficult to believe that they would just start drilling without letting us know!

PL, the point is that our top scientific facility is apparently using flawed science to decides which diagnostic tests may be used in this country. As a shareholder, I will be very happy to see higher margin sales in Europe but as a British Citizen, I will be appalled if the outcome of all this is that we end up using Innova repackaged in Wales.

“Do you believe that Porton Down’s LFT approval process, involving the use of frozen samples, is fit for purpose? If not, what can be done to stop this from becoming a major obstacle to the development of the U.K. diagnostic industry and to future pandemic preparedness?”
