In Safeways supermarket, on the east coast, while queueing my mate (whose sisters are married into Texas oil families) started chatting to an amiable guy waiting with his shopping cart.
He was the regional manager of blackwater security (as was) also ex navy seal or special forces.

The guy leading the hiking was 60 at the time. My fitness levels took of vertically. At one stage we'd climbed to the top of mountains on the edge of the badlands. I knew we had to get down quickly to reach the car and road while still light. We could see both from the top of the ridge of mountains we were on. He took the executive decision of skidding down the mountain over the ridge - there were cliffs and ... ah I have to go to sleep now. Emergency.

Walking is great stuff. The chap I said was superfit at 65 had previously had 1/3 of his stomach snipped - and he is still hiking and swimming. Get nordic poles they are the biz for speed walking.

When you drive towards the Gulf on the east coast you pass a long long road with walls as high as castles with a small neat strip of green grass outside. When a group of us reached the beach it became apparant what all this was.
They were big concrete walls surrounding Palaces.
The last palace streched out into the gulf waters gradually reducing to a long wooden peer where yachts and boats must have docked. It was like a modern version of The Golden Age and The Great Gatsby. All you could see inside the high concrete walls - think Jurassic Park high as there is nothing modern in the UK that is similar in scale - were the tops of expensively tiled domes. Opulent.
Apart from our group the only people on the beach was a local couple. Suddenly there was the sound of fairground music. We turned to look at the palace and there was some sort of party inside. Even now the sheer scale still astounds me.

Get up at 5am start work. Finish at 12pm. Load up the 4x4 and hit the road.

I was introduced to speed hiking in the desert by my mate who used to clamber up limestone escarpments and before work would get up at five to go swimming in the the Gulf (private beach). Superfit at 60. I used to be able to run 15k three times a week but I felt healthier speed hiking instead.

I miss the desert. The arabs just didn't care about anything!
