slipanchor,
"Far Superior arrived at Algeciras early afternoon yesterday and was piloted across the bay to Campameto where she has remained moored alongside since arrival.
The time spent anchored 20 miles offshore Malta may have been used for inspection and planning purposes with a view to acquiring the necessary parts and carrying out the work in Gibralter. "
I noticed the concidental (?) of the FS at Algiceras. But that boat gets about.
Circumstantial AIS evidence seems to support the speculation from another poster on another board (speculation I put forward as well, here) that the Malta stop was purely for personnel.
It would appear to be supported by the latest RNS.
Meanwhile, the boat did a cracking 9 knots+ between Malta and Gib at times, so obviously whatever the problem is, it can't be critical. Remember, she's diesel-electric, so power-generation is at the forefront. Right now it's for propulsion, later on, once in the field, it'll be shared between 'helping' keeping station without too much strain on the turret/mooring system, but also powering the production train.
If Bluewater have identified a problem (remember, this is still their call during the transit), they've done a good choice in fixing it now in an ideal place before getting out of the Med.
And as another poster with obvious technical knowledge has said, the company has referred specifically to an 'auxilliary system'. Which could be anything, which is why I haven't waded into this discussion before. It could be a bad joint in the cooling pipes, or a blown panel in the electrics. I don't know. But either way it was nothing which stopped the boat from going 'full steam ahead'.
The company has always guided FoiL in H1 2019. My bet's on end of Q1. If you've got a squeaky wheel-bearing, why not pull into the Greatest Roadside Attraction (in the Med) to get it fixed before going out to the badlands (the Atlantic).?
No sweat.
