While I completely disagree with the crooked tax system and believe that the government is completely misspending the tax dollars, you're better off playing by the rules. I would not recommend not declaring such gains.

Planning ahead usually helps. Buy stock via an isa.

You don't crystallise it all at once - you crystallise 25% tax free and then buy an annuity with the rest. Annuity income taxed as regular income every year, so you benefit from annual allowances.

That's why you don't keep all your eggs in the SIPP basket and do some tax planning.

- Use your annual CGT allowance (£11k these days?)
- Bed your ISA if you still have your annual allowance. (Up to £20k)
- Bed your wife.
- Now "Bed" your wife for tax purposes - sell stock yourself and let your wife buy it in the open market. Now you have two allowances and two CGT calcs. Afaik, this still works, but double check.
- Potentially, move your regular income into pension and that frees up your personal allowance that can shift your CGT into a lower bracket?

I'm really not up to speed on personal tax these days - double check all the options.

That's a bit optimistic I think... HMRC themselves don't know how much you need to pay them when you've just completed self assessment. I.e. their own accounting/payments system is not linked to their own self-assessment system. Might as well keep paper records, that lot.

The problem with furlough is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

I really hope we get onto this programme, especially if this can help ramp up manufacturing, but have a feeling that this has been set up for the UK version of the next Oleandrin.

Har - I just wound down and took a part time job in the meantime to spend some time with family while making the ends meet. No appetite for trying to get involved with the compensation or loan schemes. I believe the cash should go to people who really need it, not to everyone as a blanket payout. But a few pals got shafted compared to furlough payouts, and they are not cash-in-hand tax dodgers.
Fraud is fraud, you can't design policies on the basis that some criminals will commit crimes.

Talking about fraud, while I have no love for cash-in-hand dodgers, that is nothing compared to fraud & corruption that goes on in the banking and finance industry.
