UK gov reaction to SNG was disappointing to say the least.

Bruce - from my experience, if there is an opportunity to make some money illegally, there will be a crook to exploit it. If there is no opportunity to make some money illegally, there will be a crook to create such an opportunity. A pessimistic view perhaps, but that's my experience of finance & banking industry. As far as MMs go, they are pretty much given a "get out of jail free" card by the current regulation which allows them to write anything short of a murder off as "means of providing liquidity to the market".

Neil - spikes are driven by day traders amplifying all movements. They don't know what they are trading, they don't care. They just care about buying/selling pressure. AFAIK most amateurs lose money trading this way. They see a spike followed by some sells, they sell and ride off into the sunset to chase the next rainbow unicorn. Price tanks.

If you have done some research (I mean read 5 bullet points about the company, not months and months of research like some old-timers here), you should be able to put the company's market cap against the macro picture and make a call on when to sell or de-risk.
