If I remember correctly, there was a huge difference between the "best estimate" and "highest estimate" for each site, with the highest estimate being about 10 times the best estimate (the lowest estimate being at or near zero). In short, if they want domestic coal only Phulbari has the potential to supply sufficient coal to make a difference.

Recently I have increased my holding, paying about 36p on the basis that I can sell them at 46p soon. However, after today's RNS my plans have changed. We have got two key holders (Tosca and Midwestern) that have been adding shares and I expect they will not participate in the tender. If I am correct that leaves about 80 million shares available. My guess thought is the tender will be under subscribed and we will be trading near 50p afterwards. As for the motivations of Midwestern / Tosca - my guess is they are positioning for the RTO of SLE. If so Tosca will ensure that we get a good deal.

So adding Bara open pit coal might be a good idea from a political point of view, but it would not alter the project economics significantly for us. For example, including parts of Bara open pit might add say 10% to the coal mined, but we would need to give Bangladesh approx 10% interest in the project in return.

According to the JICA 2015 Bangladesh "Power System Master Plan" (published June 2016) the underground extraction at Bara will recover only 15% of the reserve of 303 million tonnes (or 45.5 million tonnes).
