I believe laws are made to protect liberties and rights and law is not made by lawyers. If you look at solicitors near you, and then filter by those that accept legal aid, it's a fraction of them. Yes, Tony and Cherie got married but they weren't actually related.
Universities are businesses many of which are dependent on overseas, as well as UK students. All pay for their privileged education, unlike my generation. I don't like the Vice Chancellors salaries anymore than i like the tuition fees but they have to compete (just like banks and any other institutions) for staff.
Easy to say bloated civil service but where would you lose them from? If you're including Local government they have been subject to year on year cuts between the coalition and the pandemic.
Check the guardian science vacancies today, 121 posts under recruitment. They aren't all equal, they are usually split between level of qualification. Is it a bad thing to have a science sector? I would argue that the requirements from all sectors to have at least a Bachelors degree have increased in my lifetime. I think access to education is the key to a good standard of living and many people don't get the opportunity, hence my point about improving access. You seem to think education is a waste of time and full of free loaders studying for nonsense degrees. I understand lawyers, scientists university lecturers and public officials, geographers are all on your unpopular list. So, tell me what kind of professions do you think qualify as "good work"? What encouragement would you give to young people?
