Seeing Machines system gets approved for Wrightbus

Tue, 30th Jul 2024 13:35

(Sharecast News) - Driver monitoring technology specialist Seeing Machines announced the successful approval of its Guardian Generation 3 driver monitoring solution for Wrightbus, the UK's largest electric bus manufacturer, on Tuesday.

The AIM-traded firm said the regulatory approval came after a rigorous process of testing, certification, and documentation, and confirmed that the system met European regulatory standards.

It said the approval was essential as Europe's new General Safety Regulation (GSR) mandates driver monitoring systems to detect signs of drowsiness.

Seeing Machines said three other commercial vehicle original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) were in the process of homologating the Guardian Generation 3.

The successful homologation by Wrightbus was expected to streamline and make the process more efficient for subsequent customers.

It also explained that the introduction of the EU GSR in 2026 would further require all vehicles to be equipped with direct, or camera-based, driver monitoring systems (DMS) to detect distraction.

Guardian Generation 3 was designed to meet the regulations, the board said.

"Achieving homologation or technical approval with Wrightbus for Guardian Generation 3 marks a significant milestone in the deployment of advanced driver monitoring systems within the public transportation sector," said chief executive officer Paul McGlone.

"Integrating our cutting edge, AI powered camera technology into Wrightbus vehicles is an important step forward in reducing the risks and accidents associated with driver fatigue, which will soon encompass distraction as regulations come into effect, fundamental to our mission of saving lives."

At 1238 BST, shares in Seeing Machines were up 2.11% at 4.6p.
